I did find an exhaustive discussion of what we know about the Atonement from scriptural sources. The book begins with an effectively-written description of the relationship between the Fall and the Atonement, summarized in a table on page 50. It then turns to the far-reaching effects of the Atonement for Christ's followers, the rest of humanity, and the whole of the physical world.
Tad Callister's central messages are summarized in Chapter 8: "The Infinite Nature of the Atonement." Take a few minutes and read its three pages closely to help you decide if now is the time for you to read the rest of this book. In it, the author summarizes those aspects of the atonement he will describe at length in the following chapters. "The Atonement seems infinite...for at least the following eight reasons, as further discussed in chapters 9 to 23...
- First...it is infinite in the divineness of the one sacrificed...
- Second, it is infinite in power...
- Third, the Atonement is infinite in time...
- Fourth, it is infinite in coverage...
- Fifth, it is infinite in depth...
- Sixth, it is infinite in the degree of suffering endured by the Redeemer...
- Seventh, it is infinite in love...
- Eightth, it is infinite in the blessings it bestows." (p. 59-60)
I personally recommend Chapter 18: "The Blessing of Peace of Mind," which describes the effects of repentance on the mind and troubled conscience of those who have been tormented by guilt. This chapter describes how the Atonement not only cleanses by brings consolation that we have put evil deeds and habits behind us. Later chapters explore additional effects of the Atonement, such as its power to motivate us in continuously correcting ourselves in this life and the promise and potential of exaltation in the next life.
This thorough and thoughtful explication of the atonement and its effects support's the author's assertion that "[t]he atonement is the central act of human history, the pivotal point in all time, the doctrine of doctrines." (p. ix). Satisfied readers will be well-prepared to read James Talmage's Jesus the Christ with a greater appreciation of the events of his life and their significance.
The first few chapters do focus on how central the Atonement of Christ is and that we often miss the boat on our focus of this doctrine.
I know that exercising just a particle of faith is the first step, and study of his word is likewise.
How can I know like Alma, the effects of as Alma says "that the very thought of coming into the presence of my God did rack my soul with inexpressible horror [because of my sins]." All I have is just the particle of faith that I should exercise some faith and believe what Alma is saying here. It just feels like I want more traction than I am getting out of his book, I want to be more driven to this end. I was hopeful he would spend more time in the vain of what President Benson said, “No one adequately and properly knows why he needs Christ until he understands and accepts the doctrine of the Fall and its effect upon all mankind. And no other book in the world explains this vital doctrine nearly as well as the Book of Mormon.” Elder Callister does mention this quote only briefly, parsed without mentioning the last part.... "...no other book in the world explains this vital doctrine nearly as well as the Book of Mormon" Elder Callister's book does spend a good amount on the Fall, and it is helpful, but what is most helpful is to see all of the Book of Mormon scriptures he quotes in context of Elder Callister's writings, which really illuminates how rich passages in the Book of Mormon are in regards to our essential need to understand the Fall, the Atonement of Christ and so forth. For this I am truly grateful for Elder Callister's writings.
I would like to make a comment on the Kindle version of this book. The content of this book was certainly worth the price. However, I am appalled at the lack of attention to detail that this publisher put into formatting this e-book. This is a pervasive problem with this publisher. I have read many e-books by this publisher and they all have the same problem of bad formatting. When you pay as much for an e-book as you do for a paper book I think we should expect, or demand, that the publisher put in the up-front effort to get it right. This publisher seems to be either ignorant of what an e-book should be, apathetic toward e-book readers, or arrogant of their near monopoly in this genre. All it would take is a few hours time for a skilled e-book editor to format the book for the kindle. However, it seems that they turn this important task over to an unskilled editor and then put it up on Amazon expecting that the readers won't notice or won't care. We do notice, and we do care. Once again Deseret Book you disappoint me.
